Can my German girlfriend study in the UK? Hello all, I’m British in the army posted in Germany, I will be getting posted back to the UK in September, I want to bring my girlfriend back with me to finish her A levels, dose any know if this is possible if a German student can study in UK and how you go about applying for it ? she 18 years old and wants to continual studying psychology. If you need more information please ask, cheers

CPG replied: "Yes this is possible for your German girlfriend to study in the U.K. As a German citizen your girlfriend would not require a visa to either visit or study in the U.K. and so this makes the entire process very simple and much less time consuming as the final step is elimited for EU citizens. So what your girlfriend must do as soon as possible is to start looking at colleges/universities in the area of the U.K. which you will be moving to and then apply to them. The applicaton process can all be completed from Germany so there is no need to delay. The first step is to search and norrow down the schools. Each college and university will have their own website, so a quick Google search search will give you the correct links for the school. Once she has narrowed down the where she would like to attend, the next step is applying to them. If you visit those websites and click on the 'admissions' section you will find a link for international applicants and there you find all of the details which she will need to apply such as the application forms, costs, the process and all of the documentation she will need to submit for a successful admission request. Once she is accepted, then it is just a matter of packing her stuff, purchasing the plane tickets and flying over. At the inspections for immigration, all she will need is her passport, letter of acceptance from the school and financial bank statements which proof that she can fund both her tuition costs and living exenses. Good luck to you both and if you have any further questions or need any clarification then feel free to contact me directly."

How much money does the UK post office charge a person to receive a package? My girlfriend lives in the UK and I live in the US and I sent her a package and timed it to arrive on her birthday. The last time I sent a package a year ago, they charged her to receive the package. This does not happen in the US and I'm not sure how much she is going to have to pay to receive the package. I believe they charge her a tax or duty according to how much the merchandise in the package is worth. I had to fill out a "Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note" declaring the value of the goods inside and it is my understanding they use this amount to determine how much she is charged. If I valued the merchandise at $27.75, how much will she have to pay to receive the package? Also, what if my estimation is wrong and the value of the goods inside is actually worth a little more than what I declared, will they know and if they find out, what will they do about it if my estimation is wrong? Please help me with these two questions, thanks.......

Lucky Man 2 replied: "usually the charge is less than £5"

dunrobin46 replied: "Customs check a percentage of the mail. If the one you sent is not checked, or checked and the value is as low as you say there will be no charge. If however yours is checked and found to be higher than you say and above the limit then your girl friend will pay customs duty + value added tax + a charge to collect the taxes."

Mikey replied: "As far as I'm aware if the item has a value of less than £18.00 ($35) you will not have to pay duty or VAT. Also if you declare the item as a "gift" you should also be exempt from duty and VAT. Anyway I get goods delivered from the U.S all the time and only get stung for charges about one in five items."

liverbird replied: "We had the same thing this week! £16.95 for a jiffy bag from the US. Apparently customs charge this for packages which contain goods worth more than $100! License to print money isn't it?"

Time it takes for letter to reach USA posted from UK? Hiya.I know Valentines Day is still a fair bit off yet.My adorable girlfriend is over in the USA as part of her job & she won't be back til February 20th.We've only been together 15 months & i absolutely adore her. I want to send her the biggest most expensive card i can get my hands on.It's a surprise as she isn't expecting one . When do i have to post the card from here in the UK to ensure she gets it in time for Valentines Day? She's in Boston, Massachussetts if this helps. Thanks.Jackie aged 28 acting like 17!!!

jamjan100 replied: "Anything up to a week depending on what part of the States the Card is going to."

株式会THE CITADEL 株式会 replied: "snail mail ,, get an e-card"

peg replied: "It will take anywhere from 5 to 7 days depending on the day you sent it and if it's around a holiday."

Andrea S replied: "Royal Mail website says about 5 days, but I've always found it nearer 10 days for standard air mail."

Courtney H replied: "it usually takes about a week.maybe a day more."

teethknees replied: "I would post it on Feb 7th."

Charles replied: "We gave it a full two weeks because the average time seemed to be about a week to ten days. Better early than late. I can only imagine the greater Valentine's celebration when she gets home on the 20th. I hope you have a fantastic dinner, have her a special box of sweets, and wish you both the best, that day and for all the days to come! Charles--That Cheeky Lad"

Can you be arrested for outstanding parking tickets. I live in The UK so only British law understanders please? I had kind of forgotten about these two tickets, now my girlfriend has text me to say I have a letter with a warrant for my arrest. With it being christmas I don't have any spare cash until Jan, will they take a post dated cheque for example?

gavmel259 replied: "If you have a warrant for your arrest, then it is to late to consider paying for them now. Even if you post-dated a cheque, it sill would not be paid. You are probably going to be dealt with by the courts with over this matter."

atticusanderson replied: "They probably wont, or maybe they will. It all depends on the officer in charge that particular day. But i wouldn't make them wait for long...I got arrested for just one ticket and they kept me for a whole night until someone came in with the money for me..."

tiggle replied: "yes u can as its considerd non payment of a fine"

waldo_mcginty replied: "The Warrant was applied for and issued because you did not pay the fixed penalty and the Cops or Traffic Wardens have escalated things.Try to establish if the Arrest Warrant is backed for Bail in which case it might be safe to reporting to your local cop shop and then you could walk back out again (on your own recognizance - personal promise to turn up) ) until the Court date.If not you have more trouble than you currently anticipate and you may need a Solicitor. PS The Magistrates are unlikely to do post-dated.You could always try the Local Authority which isued the ticket in the first place.Maybe they will be in the Christmas Spirit."

Lily B Talus replied: "no, they wont, you could put it on a credit card...It's unlikely that you'll be arrested, contact the company and discuss it with them"

frankturk50 replied: "I don't really understand what you mean by a letter with a warrant they don't send them by mail in UK.If you mean that a letter informs you that a warrant has been issued I suggest you contact local police warrants officer the warrant will usually be backed for bail and you can pay it or be bailed to court on the spot usually without arrest. No you cant pay by post dated cheque."

mickeymouse replied: "After a parking ticket remains unpaid for a certain period, it then goes to the next stage of being a fine. Fines can be enforced by arrest warrants or by a bailiff. Baliffs and police do not accept post dated cheques."

Spacebug replied: "Well you won't forget again will you?! The letter is probably a summons. Arrest warrants do not arrive by post! You've not paid a penalty charge notice, it's then doubled, then been recorded as a non payment of fines. You can be arrested so I would suggest that you go to your local Police station and ask them to check your name on PNC. If you are on PNC as Wanted for the offence then you will have to be arrested, there's no other way to deal with it. What happens then, is you pay, then you go. If you are not shown wanted, contact the authority you owe and PAY THEM! Not with a post dated cheque......"

can we switch student visa to dependant visa in the UK ? Currently, my girlfriend and I are both students in the UK, we both are oversea students. After graduation, I wish to continue my education in Feb 2007. But my current student visa expires at the end of Nov 2006. I wish to stay until Feb in the UK. One for my graduation ceremony, and also have a rest. My girlfriend wishes to stay with me. So far, there are three questions about my student visa and my girlfriend’s dependant visa (switch from her student visa). 1. In my circumstance, Can I apply for both my graduation extension and second master student visa together if I post the application documents in Nov 2006? 2. In respect of my girlfriend, we have lived together for more than one year in the UK but without marriage. Recently, we arrange to apply to get marry in mid of Sept. After that, she wishes to switch her student visa to dependant visa in the UK and apply on the same student application form with me. Is our short period marriage circumstance a barrier for our visa? Or are there any documents required to support our situation? 3. Does she need to return our country to apply for dependant visa or she could switch her student visa into dependant visa in the UK? We have done some researches for rules of dependant visa. But no straightforward answer especially for whether student visa switching to dependant visa need to apply in own counrtry or could be done in the UK. I am looking for some suggestion from experienced people or anyone who has a clear answer in mind. Many thanks! Wish you all all the best!

nitelove replied: "You should first check out the Immigraton website and you should get the information you require. But be careful. Why not apply for the new university now and get the letter of acceptance etc then with this new letter couple with your results from your last university and bank statements etc. I see no reason why you should not get acceptance. As long as one of you have a student visa then your partner get the dependent visa - just by applying. UK immigration believes that you want to stay in their country so play the game. if you have 10 years of school without spending more than a few months abroad, then you can apply for permanent stay. So 10 years in their country and you become a legal resident. You can also apply for the Highly skilled immigrant visa - check the web site. Get the information off the website or contact a lawyer!! Good luck"

bob replied: "is dependent on which country you are from??? !!!!!"

Vanessa L replied: "ok well first, if ur visa expires in Nov 06 and ur course finishes in feb 07. Then u can get ur student visa extended. If u want to stay in the UK then i suggest that u go out & look for a job now in the meanwhile. Once u get confirmation of getting a job, and ur visa is there u could possibly stay over for longer. Just go apply for a working permit, that is if ur company u are working at sponsor you. But getting married in this country wont help your application as you are considered foreigners. Once you've been in this country for 5 years running, then you can apply for a British Passport."

Mr curious replied: "Yes you can. If you marry someone, or have a child, then this person can stay as a dependants visa. If your currently here in the UK as a student and you get married, then as long as either you or your wife is still a full time student, then you can switch to a dependant visa. This is at the discretion of the immigration officer or home office. In most cases, you are allowed."

What's the best comprimise between speed and cost for mailing a Birthday Card to the UK, within 1 week? My girlfriend posted me a letter the other day from the UK to USA, and it got out here in 4 days (including weekend) for 81pence ($1.60 sh). I'd like to send her a letter from USA to UK, and having looked at it USPS seems to be around $20 for that kind of speed, although there is a cheap, but potentially long international mail for letters. Are there any other suggestions. Obviously i can email, and I've used superletter, but want to do something personal. Thanks. Chris

Jennifer A replied: "I've mailed to the UK in the last year and it only took about 2 bucks. (My daughter has a penpal) We haven't mailed since the postal increase, but I HAVE FOUND that the online list of costs are NOT accurate at usps.com. I've been able to print postage from paypal.com (with account) much easier and it has always gotten to the destination within a week (we've checked via email). However, when I have mailed things in priority packages with tracking, I have noticed the the postal service has held my packages at one facility or another (especially media mail) until the "expected" delivery date (instead of just delivering the package ahead of it's expected delivery date. Go figure!)"

What shoes to buy my girlfriend ? more info? her favourite colour is black or red im in the uk she is 5 5 usually wears long dresses rather than trousers when she goes out willing to spend up to 110 pounds what would you want ? post pic please

piggypoo replied: "Are you sure about this! I mean you are talking shoes here! Well - on your own head be it! Don't say I didn't warn you! Good Luck :o)"

loopy_lisa_liverpool replied: "take her shopping let her choose give her the cash"

woodlandgurlps replied: "i have no idea what 110 pounds is ~girl from the USA~"

dom c replied: "what sort of shoes does she wear sweetie? high heels? flat heels? boots? shoes? etc, bit more info and i'd be glad to help. message me through my profile!"

Ashley C replied: "Jimmy Choo =&addFilter=CLAS&filterValue=02"

AllBrokenUp247 replied: "Luckily my gf was kind to me when I went and bought shoes for her on my own. Do what these ladies are saying - let her choose the shoes for pity's sake!!"

A W replied: "You can't buy shoes for anyone as it is highly possible they won't fit. Be romantic, invite her on a shopping trip and let her choose and after that take her out for a nice meal, a glass of wine or a coffee. Women have definite ideas about shoes so it is unlikely that you'll get it right. Good luck anyway."

Ego replied: "Forget it. Whatever you pick, she won't like. If you really want to score big, take her out shopping for shoes. Sit patiently, like a gentleman, and compliment every pair that she puts on her feet. Your opinion does not matter. Say you don't care for the shoes, when they cost more than your limit. Say you adore the shoes when the other women in the shop also like them."

xjuicyx replied: "I think you should break the budget and get her some Christian Louboutins, theyre black with a red sole so basically perfect!!... I would die for a pair of these... "

t c replied: "It's bad luck to but shoes for your partner. I don't know where this came from, but I have found it to be true."

I've been reading all the comments about problems the UK's having with immigrants, cant the Queen do anything? I'm from the US yet I've recently acquired an interest in the UK since I met my English girlfriend online. After talking for a year, I went over to meet her, she has been over here 3 times and soon we're both going to live together in the US permenently. She's told me of the problems with the National Health Care System and while there I read articles involving the immigrants and how they're often a drain on government services. It seems that the government is too anxious to give hand outs to immigrants and they reward and encourage non productivity by doing this. It seems as if things have gotten out of hand. I've read comments UK citizens post here, many of them say it's gotten to the point of no return and nothing can be done to save the UK now. I was reading about how the government system in the UK works and it says the Prime Minister must report to the Queen each week. Can't the Queen tell the Prime Minister to put the brakes on immigrants and stop with all the handouts?

fluffybunny replied: "no the Queen can't do anything...the Government could do something - but don't & that is the same with Tory or Labour...they are all as much use as a chocolate fireguard!!"

largslassie replied: "LOL the Queen's family are Germans. They were originally the Saxe-Coburgs but changed their name to Windsor duering the 1914-18 war. The Queen's husband, Prince Philip, is Greek. So ther is your first two immigrants to start with."

MimsyyPie. replied: "No, one thing about the UK I should explain. The Queen doesn't run the country, parliament does, the Queen is just a figurehead and doesn't make any decisons herself. If anyone should make any comments or do anything to stop them it should be parliament. I don't like the way the UK is treating immigrants anyway, I mean, if suddenly the whole country turned on you how would you feel? Anway, hoped my comment helped. Mims x"

Musk replied: "Wish she could.."

dlk replied: "And this to will be coming to the USA if we citizens do not wake up to the fact that illegals are a burden on everything. You can see the same things happening today, that happened in England. All the Political Correctness crap, listening to the several groups, our politicians do not seem to working for us, the actual legal citizens of this country. WAKE UP"

Seaside Sweetheart replied: "The Queen is visiting her husband in hospital at the moment, so is unavailable to anything important like immigration or the Crown Jewels, please direct any questions to Prime Minister Gordon (Bennett) Brown who will ignore all requests however important."

joanne c replied: "The Queen is head of state. Not head of government. She probably has 10 times the sense of most of our politicians, but what can she do. This government listen to noone anyway. They represent their own interests."

Mama~peapod replied: "If it was only that easy..."

Andy replied: "The problem is there is very little difference made in media reports between legal EU economic migration (that usually benefits the UK) and illegal immigration from outside Europe, which is a huge drain on the system. Unlike in America where many such migrants speak a common language (Spanish), many small cities here now have several hundred languages in use: costing millions in translation costs and legal help. Media and public opposition to immigration usually centres on an unwillingness to learn English and to integrate with or contribute to British society amongst some (often Muslim) ethnic groups. -- (And the Queen's husband is Greek, so I'm not sure how well that would go down...)"

peanuthead replied: "LOL Sad but the Queen is really nothing. She's the tolken white lady..... They are sunk deeper than we are...and that's nothing to brag about."

Philoneus B replied: "Hi Curtis!Just read your Q.The Queen can't actually DO anything ,she's a figurehead only and cannot directly inform or enforce any kind of influence on the House of Parliament ,the House of Lords or the Prime Minister. In fact, its one of the terms of the job,you could say.She only gets to keep being the Queen if she shuts up,sits down and signs whats put before her, otherwise, she's out of a job and has to start being Mrs Battenberg (Anglisized as 'Mount'...(Berg) 'Batten',a rich German Hausfrau with a Greek boyfriend.Sad."

ÑUSTA replied: "Ocupate de tus asuntos!"

ee-or replied: "Get the Queen to do something LOL. The royal family are just another bunch of scroungers."

LadyMoonlight!! replied: "Sadly the Queen is Head of State, not Head of the Government. In the interests of Democracy, the Royals are divorced from any real, practical power. Which is a shame as the useless corrupt, inept and pointless excuse we have for a "Government" at present are making a total mockery of this country, throwing taxpayers' money away, flooding us with immigrants and rewarding any lazy scumbag who wants to scrounge from the State, whilst taxing and penalising the hard working man to pay for this. I wish the Queen could kick the politicians' backside out of power. I honestly feel like she'd do a better job of running the country than they do. Unike them, she cares for the British people. And contrary to what some of the idiots above have posted, the Queen is NOT "German". She has some German ancestry dating WAY back (over 200 years) but she is British."

babs replied: "Unfortunately our Queen is only a symbol for our country she is head of state but doesnt have any power as such. The weekly meeting is a briefing to explain what is going on in parliment and the Queen may indeed offer advise or critisism of a particular situation but The Prime Minister acts solely with his government and doesnt have to follow what she says."

Think global, drink local replied: "What you won't read in the English right wing press is that without our immigrants, there would be no-one to pick vegetables, clean floors, drive taxis, work in factories and do all the other jobs that the English are too lazy to do. Worst of all, there would be nowhere near enough doctors and nurses to run the NHS. People always blame immigrants and minorities for societies problems. Its a tactic that Hitler used to good effect."

Beyond brainwashing replied: "You have to look a bit deeper and beyond the spin and the mainstream media. Nothing is as it seems. The Prime Minister is not really answerable to the Queen. The reason the immigrants get hand outs is because the government need them. Due to the great levels of decreased babies being born and an increase in the elderly who are about to retire. The government is worried that they do not have enough native people to pay tax which subsidise the pension payouts. The government is lowering the borders and destroying sovereignty, but you won’t hear that in the mainstream media. Are you aware that in the US they are lowering the boarders and encouraging immigrants in to America while spinning through the media about how much time and money there utilising on controlling the borders. Are you also aware that Bush, Mexico President and the Canadian president have already signed a treaty that amalgamates the three countries as one, making it one state. It is called 'The North American Union'. Now if you have not heard about it, you have to ask yourself why not? Most Americans are unaware of this agreement. But then the Government rely on people being apathetic and too glued to mainstream media to their own research. Now here is the main reason for lowering the borders.....It’s too destroy nationalism, togetherness. Divide and conker that is there aim, people will not rise up against the inevitable tyranny to come because there will be no unity, no togetherness people will be afraid and suspicious of each other. The North American Union will have everyone under one control, until they have the world under one police state. To morrow the I.D. card, next the thumb print, then the eye scan and eventually their ultimate plan (fact) to microchip us all like a dog!"

penelope_pitstop replied: "why don't you just go away - you don't even live in the UK - and by the way not all immigrants are the same. Some work hard, pay their taxes and don't have access to any kind of benifits like my husband, I hate all the generalisations on here - it's disgusting. Why don't you preach to all the British people on benifits - cause there are plenty of them."

jonny Atlantis replied: "buy a ticket to norway and go visit her"

Liam replied: "send her a ticket to the uk"

samfd2001 replied: "I don't know but it's not nice to refer to her as a broad!"

Paul D replied: "fly out and surpise her with a kiss and a card. priceless."

Holden replied: "I sure hope your girlfriend is a broad. Be the pits if she was a dude."

JoJo replied: "A birthday card with a photo of the 2 of you together wiv a pressed rose then write on the back of the picture 'you'll get your real present when I see you' ;-) She'll soon be back!"

g.hobbs replied: "It's her birthday, you are her boyfriend. Maybe she might like to see you? Then maybe you can go and have a night out together! No brainer really unless you can't aford to see her. If that's the case then how about naming a time your go over and saving for that day!"

cfm_21 replied: "fly to norway, or get her to come to uk, a romatic night out, and a weekend off to go somewhere. since you don't see her that often, this will be a nice outing. if not possible, order flowers and a present to be delivered to her in Norway. chocolate, too. present? maybe some light, pretty jewellery - or a nice, fancy long overcoat. it's cold in norway, isn't it?"

TULIP LIPS replied: "send flowers interflora is every where she will love them and it is cheaper than a ticket to norway"
